Basic Life Support (BLS) is the foundational course for healthcare professionals, emergency medical providers, and trained first responders who provide care to patients in a wide variety of in-facility and prehospital settings. Basic Life Support is the cornerstone program for healthcare professionals. If you work for Alberta Health Services, or plan to work for them, you require Heart & Stroke Basic Life Support.
As the gold standard, Heart & Stroke’s Basic Life Support training courses teach the theoretical and hands-on skills needed to respond to medical emergencies and drives the best possible patient outcomes. The course covers single- and multi-rescuer basic life support skills with a focus on high-quality CPR and team dynamics in a wide variety of prehospital or in-facility settings.
Basic Life Support is a pre-requisite for advanced resuscitation courses and many healthcare-related training programs. A current completion card is often required for employment in the healthcare field. You may also benefit from having your Basic Life Support level if you are a professional with a fire service or rescue team, a sports medicine professional, a lifeguard or a ski patroller. If you are not a first responder or medical professional, you may need CPR Level C.
Individuals who need training due to work requirements or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home. Individuals who work in the field or in the energy sector are required to have this full Standard level ticket.

This Heart & Stroke Foundation Basic Life Support course contains updated content and science from the most recent guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiac Care. The skills taught are as follows:
